Felabration is an annual international celebration dedicated to the promotion of Afrobeat Music and of African Culture, and to the commemoration of the life, music and legacy of Warrior Poet and Creator of Afrobeat, FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI.

As the creator of Afrobeat, social critic, political activist and champion of the underprivileged as well as a philosopher of his own political ideologue, Fela is still today a hero to millions for his contributions to society.

Felabrations are generally held in October around the world -- Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Brazil, France, and of course... across the US and right here in Atlanta!

Felabration annual festivities of music and arts commemorate the life and times of Africa's best known musical icon, the late, great Fela Anikulakpo Kuti.

And best of all, we've added several FREE events to the 2014 Felabration festivities!!

This year Atlanta's Felabration events begin on Wednesday, October 1st and culminating with a musical tribute to Fela Anikulapo Kuti on Saturday, October 4th!

ABOUT THE FILM:

Documentary (120 minutes)
Director: Alex Gibney

"FINDING FELA" tells the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti's life, his music, his social and political importance. He created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, using that forum to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan Africanist politics to the world. The power and potency of Fela's message is completely current today and is expressed in the political movements of oppressed people, embracing Fela's music and message in their struggle for freedom.

ABOUT THE FILM:

Documentary (90 minutes)
Director: Emma Christopher

Josefa held her village’s songs and dances in her heart. Captured in Africa, she treasured them as she was loaded into the gruesome hold of a slave ship and then sold as a beast of burden in Cuba. Toiling on a plantation, she taught the songs and dances to her children and grandchildren, words and rhythms that lost their original meanings but still resonated with the cadences of their stolen identity. Now, 160 years later, might those same songs and dances enable her descendants to make their way home?

"THEY ARE WE" tells the story of how Josefa’s descendants have kept some of their origins alive. It shows the incredible search for their African roots and then follows the two halves of the family as they try to overcome their problems—the Africans’ extreme poverty and the Cubans’ lack of freedom to travel—to meet again. It is a story of surviving the worst of human experience and how family ties can outlast just about anything.
